New year, same old tune.
Tiger Woods came in T15 last week during the Genesis Open at Rivera Country Club shooting 70-71-65-73. He hit the ball solid all week especially off the tee. Hitting more than 60% of his fairways all week, which is great. Whats not great is how he putted.
He said it perfectly saying that he “putted as bad as a human can putt” in round 1 with a woeful 34 putts. When he hit 17/18 greens, that CAN NOT HAPPEN. For him to be successful this year, he has to make putts outside of 20ft because lets face it, he’s averaging 285 yards off of the tee. So he’s not going to have kick ins for birdie, he had the opportunities, just did not capitalize..
5 birdies and 4 bogeys in round 1, all of his 4 bogeys were 3 putts….BRUTAL. Gut punch, kick right in the nuts. Whatever you want to call it that hurts, was hitting the ball well enough to be 6 or 7 under but settled for -1.
Round 2 was much of the same, I give him the benefit of the doubt due to he was tired playing 28+ holes in one day, so I will take him making the cut on by 1. For a guy who’s 43 with 500 back surgeries, probably not to good for that.
Round 3 he finally got the flat stick cooking as he started -5 thru 4, highlighted by the sexy eagle on 11 (2nd hole)
After his front 9 31 (-5) he catapulted himself back into contention and into the top 20. Then he followed that up with ANOTHER eagle at 1 (10th) hole.
He bogeyed the 8th hole (17th hole) and shot 34 -1 on the back side for a cool -6 65.
Round 4 he looked gassed, and it was visible by him making tired swing after tired swing. It was a long four days for him but the highlight on Sunday was him holding his bunker shot on 16 (7th hole) to get within 4.
He just didn’t capitalize on the par 5 17th and par 5 1st hole making both pars and he made 4 straight 5s basically taking him straight out of the tournament. When he holed his bunker shot, he was Solo 5th. Not even an hour later he was T15. Which stings. But onward
Tiger is playing the WGC this week in Mexico for the first time so hopefully the warm weather will do our man some good.
